A baby silver langur is making its debut at the Bronx Zoo in New York. The monkey from the marmoset family was born in November last year.
But before appearing before the public, she had to grow up and get stronger.
Silver langurs are also called maned langurs. These monkeys have black fur with gray tips. This is why it seems silver. However, babies are born with orange ones.
The homeland of silver langurs is the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra. They are also found on the Malay Peninsula and the Bunguran Islands. These animals are listed in the Red Book, as they are close to a vulnerable position.
Silver langurs mainly feed on leaves. A three-chambered stomach helps to digest them. Occasionally, the monkeys eat fruits, seeds and flowers. They live in trees in mangrove forests and coastal thickets.
The Bronx Zoo is home to the largest group of silver langurs in North America.
