The US government will create a registry for illegal immigrants to submit information about themselves, otherwise they could face fines and prison, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing a draft resolution.
“The Trump administration plans to create a registry for immigrants in the US illegally to submit personal information about themselves, otherwise they could face fines or prison time,” the newspaper writes.
It is noted that migrants will be required to leave their fingerprints and home addresses. According to the draft, the penalty for failure to comply with these requirements includes a fine of up to $5,000 and up to six months in prison.
The publication recalls that President George W. Bush created a similar registry after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, after which tens of thousands of people were expelled from the country.
On Inauguration Day on January 20, in his first speech as the 47th President of the United States, Trump promised to immediately stop illegal immigration into the United States and begin the process of extraditing millions of migrants. He also declared a national emergency in connection with the situation on the southern border of the United States.
